Not only colour and type of fixation make skates different from each other, however all of them have one principle of general structure – 2 main functional parts: the lower – chassis (frame+wheels), the upper – shoes. The material, shape, size and many other characteristics directly affect the type of skate. We can’t move on, especially, study some parts without realizing the main aim of skating. After all, skates it’s a vehicle – nothing more. And why we need to move, where and how? This is determined by “Skating style”.
Skating for rest(recreation) – first and basic step of development: easy skating in parks, empty streets for fun. Complies with the usual walking and has no training meaning. Beginners follow this style, who are not planning to visit regular classes in order to achieve any goals and just want to “try”.
Fitness – option of more active time. The load on body is much more, what allows you to keep fit with regular classes. At this stage skater can get a good speed till 30 km/h, not afraid of sharp turns and ling trips. Power uses correspond to a fairly energetic workout or a fast running.
The only one demand about skates – to be comfortable and safe. Most often, they have a soft, tall shoes, speed lacing system, long frame, wheels with diameter of 80mm or 90mm and brake (what in fact is the main feature).
Short info. It should be noted that usual running has three phases: repulsion, a short flight and landing. At the final phase the human body is exposed to impact load, in which its own weight as it is increased by 5 times. This load negatively affects the spine. But with smooth gliding on roller skates on asphalt (or any kind of surface) anything like this is not observed. Skater get real pleasure from speed, sensation of flight, freedom and happiness. But we must keep attentive, because you can meet a lot of irregularities on your way.
Aggressive – type of extreme skating, which is actively fueled by video films showing stages of spectacular tricks. Each of us – with diligence and perseverance – can achieve such a level, to express themselves, show their skills and earn the respect of friends! Aggressive divided into two kinds, depending on the place of skating – “Street” and “Vert”.
Street – training and events in specially selected locations, often called ‘Spot’. There are should be handrails, curbs, high steps, parapets. In addition can be placed trampolines, acceleration boards, planks for jumping and other constructions. Roller has to perform various tricks, sliding on the “verges”, jumps and other acrobatic movements. When police asked to leave the spot, skaters look for another point – the benefit of a big city. At one time in America was fighting with such a style through legislation.
Vert – riding the ramp, or in the west, in the half-pipe. This artificial hill as a “bottom half pipe”, where you can roll from one steep wall to the other and back. Large and expensive piece, therefore rarely found in our country. Such structures can be found in specialized skateparks in some Russian cities, in Asia, Europe and the United States. By the way, the word “ramps” is just a “springboard” and applied to the half-pipe design historically. The number of tricks includes flights, various kinds of flips, handstands, slides (sliding) on the verge of the ramp.
It is clear that requirements for such skating style are much more serious – needed impact resistance, a good fixation of the ankle, maneuverability and ability to survive endless trainings. Skates with two small wheels on the frame edges, with a cut in the middle are made for it.
Freeskating, Urban – very general (but most popular) skating style, mix of street skating and fitness. Common between freeskate and street is technical riding around the city with overcoming various barriers at full speed: jumping over curbs and stairs, slides, steep turns… speed combined with love of risk and danger. Which streen skater doesn’t love fast and risky skating! Danger excites, allow discharge accumulated life stress. On the other hand, this style can be attributed the the mass skating in the city, with a demonstration of technical readiness; long outing with a tourist clope to the neighboring towns, parties, where you can play different skating games. For example catch skating. The main branches of this skating style are:
Jumps. Jumps on skates can be different: you can do free jump, most often it comes down to jumping over the bar. There is also a long jump, high jump (jumping over the bar using ramp, as higher as better). Style jump – jumps using ramp with acrobatic elements. Style Jump in BigBag – jumping using acceleration in a huge air bag.
Slides. The ability to slide – is a very useful skill that allows you to slow down surely in almost any situation. As this is a separated discipline, with its own rules and competitions. Athlete’s task is to slow down in the most strange and difficult way, also slide as far as possible and do not fall. The main problem of this discipline is short life of the wheels, so you need to choose them attentively, taking into account the stiffness and the floor, where you are going to train.
Rollersport is very young, that’s why a lot of different disciplines are developing actively: Skate-cross, Downhill, Powerblading, Sloupstyle and many others.
To fully enjoy such skating you need strong skates. Hard plastic boots with soft inside part and anti-shock under the heel, good frame and wheels, that can withstand long skating on the asphalt. Nowadays, already available models in which the plastic or textile parts are supplemented with carbon elements, thereby reducing the weight of our “shoe”. But do not forget about the protection, which includes helmet, elbow pads, wrist and knees protection.
Sportive skating styles
Now let’s turn to the skating styles, that have it’s own prototypes in other, more familiar to us, kinds of sport. Many countries have established rollersport federations that make accent on the below listed disciplines. All participants of the competition can be divided into three groups: professionals, fans and, of course, beginners.
Slalom – the most popular and well-developed discipline. On the specially marked up area skater put cones. There are 3 types of slalom – speed slalom, artistic slalom, freestyle slalom battle.
Speed slalom: your goal is to accelerate (you have 12 meters for it) and as fast as possible pass 20 cones on one foot, avoid cicking the cones. The distance between the cones is 80 cm. There are formal rules that describe every possible situation of getting and avoiding the penalties.
Style slalom: can fully remind the audience figure skating. The athlete chooses the music in advance, build his run with stylish and technical tricks. For judgement used an odd number of judges (3 or more). But everything is not as easy as it looks like, it’s necessary to take into account the ease and smoothness of performance, speed, artistry, and the complexity of the program in general. The athlete has 3 cones lines with distances: 120 cm (14 pieces), 80 cm (20 pieces) and 50 cm (20 pieces), located at a distance of 2 meters from each other.
Freestyle slalom battle: The most dynamic and the most not clear to the viewer discipline. The purpose of the athlete: show all what he can do in a few runs to 30 seconds. In the finals of this discipline audience can see the most complex tricks and combinations, which no one could imagine! Best skaters can adjust their skating to unfamiliar music, performing tricks in its rhythm.
To choose skates for these disciplines we suggest you be very careful, as 50% of the shoe is made of carbon fiber, all have different lifting, etc. But also such skates have the ability to thermoforming up to your foot, or you can fort them by using a special hairdryer that allows to give them the shape of your feet. Rollersport develops and manufacturers are not standing still, however if you wish, you can order skates by mask of your feet, what will provide better control of different tricks. We are not suggesting you to skate in the city with suck skates, because they do not amortise all city bumps.
Speedskating – time trials. Using specific skating technique, special skates, fitting for better aerodynamics clothes. Direction has its admirers. The first world championship in speed skating was held in 1937 in Italy. As it is known, skates was originally used as summer training for skiers and ice skaters. Now the problem is the opposite: what speedskaters can do in winter?
Hockey on rollerskates became popular long time ago. The first roller-hockey team was founded in 1901 in London, and the first world championship was held in 1936 in Germany. In our country development of roller-hockey is getting a new wave of development and soon we are expecting one more Ukrainian cup.
In general, you can do on skates whatever you wish: do figure skating, dance, play frisbee, basketball etc.
